The Björneström community came about thanks to the mill. It was here that the Virserum countryside furniture industry grew during the latter part of the 1800th century. Society reflects the turn of the century. An environment that primarily shows large residential buildings with beautiful joinery delight.

One reason why mills were built here was Björnån. It should be noted that a mill was already in place in the 1400s and at the end of the 1600s a crown mill (customs mill) was set up.

Not far upstream from the mill, on the same side of the river, was a dyehouse from the 1830s. Across the river from the mill, at the upper western Björnöfallet, was a tannery. In the 1880s, a dairy was also established in Björnöström.

In the lower case, there must have been a leg stump and a stool, which were probably parts of one and the same plant. Only some parts of the mill are preserved, but the mill itself is intact.

In the pond by the road is the sculptor Teodor Karlsson's sculpture “Näcken”. It was manufactured in 1948. Näcken is a supernatural male aquatic creature that mainly lives in rivers, streams, ponds and lakes inland. Theodor Karlsson lived in Björneström, where he worked in his own workshop and studio. He is probably best known for having made the "royal chairs" in Räpplinge church on Öland. Theodor has also created the baptismal font in Virserum's church.

This is a place on earth that is close to my heart. The sculptor is also related to my aunt's husband. Absolutely worth a visit!
