Borgekulle at Blaxhult: a historic and scenic place
If you are interested in history and nature, you can visit Borgekulle at Blaxhult in northern Kalmar county. Borgekulle is an ancient fortress from the Iron Age located on top of a mountain with a fantastic view of the landscape.
An ancient fortress is a fortified place that was used as a refuge or guard in times of unrest. Ancient castles were usually built on high and steep places that were easy to defend, near waterways that were important for communication and trade. There are around 60 ancient castles in northern Kalmar County, but Borgekulle is one of the largest and best preserved.
To get to Borgekulle you have to follow some steep paths up the mountain. On the way you can see four burial mounds from different times. One of them is from the Stone Age and contains a chest of stone slabs that is 3,5 meters long. It indicates that the place has been inhabited for a long time.
Once up on the mountain, you are met by the remains of the old castle. It consists of a ring wall of stones surrounding an area of approximately 100 x 80 meters. The wall has had two entrances, one in the north and one in the south. Inside the castle there are traces of house foundations and fireplaces that show how people lived here more than 1000 years ago.
From the castle you also have a breathtaking view of the surroundings. You can see all the way to the Baltic Sea in the east and Småland's forests in the west. One can also imagine what the landscape looked like during the Iron Age, when there might have been a lake below the mountain that was connected to the sea.
