Church of Virserum

Virserum church is built in neo-Gothic style with its characteristic high spire and pointed arched windows and portals.

Virserum's current church was built during the years 1879-1881.

The original church is generally considered to date from the 1300th century.

It came to be ravaged by fire sometime during the 1500th century. It is not certain whether the whole church burned down or was only badly damaged.

The first time the written sources allow us to guess any of the appearance of the church is a royal letter from October 29, 1690, when the congregation is granted to collect for the rebuilding of the western part of the church, which is dilapidated and insufficient.

The old church was demolished in 1880. The wood was sold to the Swedish Missionary Association for SEK 100 and was used the same year for the construction of the parish mission church. The first drawings for the new church were prepared by the architect Ludvig Hedin, Stockholm. However, the new church was designed by Carl Gust Löfquist, Oskarshamn. It was first used at the Christmas lottery in 1880.

From the old church the altarpiece has been preserved, who made it is not known. The author of the pulpit from 1626 is also unknown, possibly the same man who made the pulpit in Järeda church.

Two bells hang in the church tower. There are 12 coin imprints on the large bell's writing band around the neck and another 2 coin imprints on the body of the watch. With the help of these imprints, one can determine that the watch must

have been cast most recently during the 1520s.

The church has a large set of textiles made in the 1900th century.

Among other things, a trade fair hook from 1977 and a choir rug woven by the textile artist

Inga-Mi Vannérus-Rydgran, Hultsfred.

The church's oldest bridal crown was made by the goldsmith Carl Adam Svanberg from Vimmerby. It was awarded at the industrial exhibition in Stockholm in 1866.
