Hulingen

A sport fishing lake with a smooth lake character that contains large pike and carp fish.

The cave is centrally located near Hultsfred's urban area. The easiest way to find the lake is if you drive to Hultsfred's campsite, which is signposted from the center. Adjacent to the campsite is also the hometown park and where Silverån ends in Hulingen. If you travel by train or bus, the lake is visible below the railway station. The lake's surroundings are dominated by deciduous forests and in the northern part the beaches are flat, the water vegetation is sparse and the water depth amounts to about 3 meters.

Further south in the lake from Björkudd to Järnudda the lake is deeper. Here you will find the lake's deepest areas with deep slopes, which are good fishing areas for coarse pike and perch. The southern part of the lake is shallow with depths of up to 2 meters containing bays with dense vegetation. The protected grounds make the lake a fine bird lake and around 250 bird species have been observed around the lake, of which about 110 are nesting. Hulingen has a bird protection area in the southern part which means a ban on access during the period 1/4 - 31/7. Besides birds there are otters at and adjacent to the lake.

Hulingen has long been known as a lake with large pike and fish up to 15 kg have been caught. Fish between 5 and 10 kg are common and it is easiest to get in touch with the larger fish by fishing when the water temperature is lower and to seek pike around the deeper areas. The right method in winter is ice cream in places where there are depth variations. In the early spring and late autumn, drag rods with large vobblers or floats with baitfish are the best methods.

Large pike are found outside the treatment plant, around Björkudd with the island outside and north of Baståndsviken. In these places there are depth changes and you can often find the pike adjacent to slopes, at depths between 3 and 6 meters. Spin fishing in connection with vegetation such as reeds and water lilies is good, as the pike find shelter and food in these places. Around the edges in the northern part you almost always get fish. All types of bait from spinners to jerkbait work. Fly fishing on Pike can can really be recommended, 10 to 15 Pike can be caught on a fishing pass that is released.

The perch is available in all sizes and can be found a little everywhere in the lake and if you are a fisherman you should try fishing around Björkudd. Winter time often puts a lot of perch in all sizes around the cape. Try Granny for the smaller perch on shallow water and vertical or balance pier for the larger fish at depths between 2 and 5 meters. Adjacent to the estuary and outside the campsite are often slightly larger perch. There, it is effective to bottom coat with mask, roach or mock. You can fish the bream and roach with bottom mite and corn, maggot or worm as bait. Good places are the section at Stenbryggan, the section below the hometown park and at the estuary.

During the spring, at the turn of April-May, many roach go up the river to spawn, and then you can take the opportunity to fish in the estuary. In addition, large pike follow the roach hour up the river and then the pike food can be good. Sarv and tench can be found in shallow water adjacent to dense vegetation. Around the estuary and east of the swimming area there are shallow places to try for these species and the most fun is to float bait with corn or worms. Fishing from the (stone jetty) below Sjölykkan is a popular fishing spot with many species of fish. Nice and warm spring and summer evenings are best for this fishing. Eels can be found everywhere in the northern part of the lake. Also large lake has been observed from ice, which may be interesting to test.

A fisherman was out trolling for pike with a jig 4-5 meters deep outside Björkudd in 2019 when a Mal of 23,5 kg. and 147 cm. long cut on the jig The catfish is protected, so it was released back.
