Oscar Hedstrom was one of the founders of the Indian motorcycle. He was the chief engineer. Oscar Hedström built the first prototype in 1901. He was good as a designer, which gave the early Indian bikes a reputation for being well-built and reliable. The Indian quickly became the world's best-selling motorcycle.

Oscar Hedström's birth

Oscar Hedström was born in Åkarp, Lönneberga parish, Småland March 12, 1871. Hedström emigrated to America in 1880 with his family.
In January 1901, a contract was signed between Hendee and Hedström. This contract was for Hedström to build a "light" motorcycle. Not for racing but for everyday use to ordinary man. This was the start of the legendary Indian motorcycle.

In 1902, the first Indian motorcycle is sold to the public. It has chain drive and elegant design. In 1903, Oscar Hedström broke the world speed record for motorcycles by 90 km / h.
Oscar Hedström died at the age of 89 in his home in Portland, Middlesex County, Connecticut, USA on August 29, 1960.

At the place where Oscar Hedström was born, there is a memorial stone erected in his memory.
